Off Season Blues

hotel-bed

Recording and Mixing Dates: Recorded July 31, 2016 and April 1, 2017. Mixed April 1, 2017.

Genesis:  I wrote this song on May 7, 1995. I have written several songs about good intentions and procrastination, so it is not surprising that is the theme of this song. I was going for a Gordon Lightfoot early 1970s feel: he calls this type of song a “toe tapper.”

Production: Bass Guitar, Acoustic Guitars, Mandolin, and Brush Drums.

Lyrics:

OFF SEASON BLUES

I’ve got the off season blues

What am I gonna do?

I don’t want to waste my time again

Like breaking in new shoes

I’m stiff but that aint news

I’ll sit myself down and make a plan

Tomorrow when the sun comes up

I’ll be dressed and fed

I’ll kiss my love on the cheek

As she sleeps in our bed

By 8 o’clock or so

I’ll be humming as I go

The words will be rolling out of me

I’ve got the off season sag

My heart is feeling the drag

My shoulder won’t stay against the wheel

Lying back and catching rays

Dreamy mind in a squint-eyed daze

More and more doing nothing has appeal

Tomorrow when the sun comes up

I’ll be out the door

I’ll grab the bull by the horns

And even up the score

By 10 o’clock or so

I’ll be working don’t you know

Making up for all that I let slide

I’ve got the off season blues

Not paying anymore dues

Competing with the voice inside my head

I’m coasting through the day

Dropping everything to play

I’m aimless and I know I’ve lost the thread

Tomorrow when the sun comes up

I’ll be far away

Dreaming of the things to come

And bits of yesterday

I’ve got the off season blues

What am I gonna do?

Time just keeps melting day by day
